5G is as over hyped as 3G was back in the day

so what you're saying is increases in mobile network speed is stupid and we should go back to everything being EDGE

that gives my a throwback to when T-Mobile UK charged for GPRS and EDGE per minute rather than data use

i still dont get why 5G is coming to consumer phones
like, wouldnt it be better to just keep 5G to the future devices that'll neeed it? (say, self-driving cars or w/e meme we come up with by then)
i dont think the average user notices the different between 50Mbps and 1000000000000000000Mbps if they just browse facebook

they do very much, given that

  • many phones have more resolution than both my monitors, so they need and generate more data
  • streaming is as popular as never before
  • everything is stored online so you have to send it there (you don't store pretty much anything offline)
  • a typical "modern" website needs a ton of data because muh js effects and background images

and normal people do all that outside, without home wifi, on data

it's true that most of that has completely no reason to come to consumer phones, like why does a normal person need a 4K screen and camera on a 6" device, but upgrading these parameters created a need for more powerful internet

on the other hand, i have a smol phone, shitty camera, store music offline (that was very fun on a recent trip with no internet access, when i was the only one who had any music because spotify didn't work lmao), and i get on good with just LTE

the idea of intentionally holding back technology because "hurrdurr you don't need it yet" is extremely anti-consumer

i have a google pixel 2 xl. it has a 1440p panel. I can stream 1440p video from youtube through my vpn on verizons lte just fine (verizon throttles youtube to 1mb/s making anything over 360p unwatchable)
on the other hand you have to realize that a lot of the things they want to equip wih 5g is spyware. From self driving cars to stoplights and smart home devices, these devices pry into our lives and are a security nightmare. That also means that they can make the 5g network more insecure.

We can get along fine with lte for another 10 years just fine, especially with lte advanced promising 1gb/s transfer speeds (1/2 of the 2gb/s requried for 5g).

Edit: I really like your point osk. The only people who notice a difference are power users

btw i use arch, and you should too, shame on you.

well, if the things that 5G is "intended" for are spyware, wouldn't you want the network to be saturated with people just doing dumb shit on their phones instead so the spyware purposes have to fight for the bandwidth to spy?
