I think this also happens on the News items too since they use the same system
I'm not able to reproduce this myself right now but it could be permission related somehow. Another possibility is that some privacy extensions strip the HTTP Referer header which the comments code uses to send you back to where you came from, the default action if nothing or an invalid URL is supplied is to send you to the homepage so that lines up. I have a full rewrite of the comments UI planned anyhow that would implicitly fix this issue by getting rid of the scenario altogether lol.
