an excellent treatment on the subject, i've never taken the topic seriously enough to consider the history and development of the idea but having it framed as a concurrent symptom of other cultural dysfunctions makes a lot of sense

no idea who this guy is but his lectures are fantastic, it's difficult to find good presentations on chinese philosophy and history that aren't reductive or generally bad. i have seen many japanophiles take a stab at similar things and i have not been impressed

So I am glad to see this video in fact I'm very glad because it means more people are recognizing this problem. The standards for what makes a "good" flag have been completely astroturfed with little reverence to historical traditions and essentially trying to collapse them into corporate or sports logos. Of course, that doesn't mean that we don't need simple flags at times. In the past having distinct flags was necessary to spot friends on the battlefield, thus the use of the St. Andrew's Cross "battle flag" of the Confederacy in the Civil War, which was designed to be distinguished from the Union banners (the "stars and bars" Austrian-style flag was too easily confused with the US flag at long distances). But the rules that people have proposed are arbitrary, contradictory even, and the "vexillology" handbook even admits there are exceptions to its rules among what are universally regarded as the best national & state flags. This hit recently where I live because my state required our new flag to agree with the "principles of vexillology" or whatever BS, while at the same time legally mandating they would only approve flags with "In God We Trust" written on them. Talk about a contradiction!

if you want to save money on rust removal this is a must-do. Great for restoring antiques

i'll have to try this on my broad axe, i sometimes buy cool old hand tools at an antique store in town and they definitely need restoration but i usually just use them regardless. it would be cool if they looked nice
