What keyboard do you use?
#15318
I just use a Dell L100 keyboard (the kind you'd see on every office PC in 2009) but I'm thinking about getting a new one. On the other hand, I value the austerity of the dell & how well it's held up for so many years. So I'm wondering, what keyboards does everyone else use?

Varmilo VA87M. Bought it back in like 2014 on Massdrop when I was autistically interested in keyboards. It doesn't really hold up nowadays with how big the enthusiast keyboard market has gotten but at the time it was one of the only non gaymer keyboards out there that looked decent.

For generic Dell keyboards that you used to get packed in with computers I think that the AT101W and the Oval Dells are the best from what I've tried. I used a few L100's and I really didnt like them. The oval ones are really good for a rubber dome. They're quite common as well so if you manage to find one I'd say get it.

sadly even though I frequent thrift stores etc. I rarely see keyboards that old. Even finding anything PS/2 can be difficult now it feels like, but I'll keep my eye out. Thanks

I have the Varmillo VA88M sakura femboy keyboard with cherry MX black switches. It's tenkeyless but retains the nav cluster and arrow keys which is perfect for me. Unfortunately some of the keyswitches are seeing some wear and I need to open it up at some point to investigate. My D key often doesn't register since like 2021 (I got it in 2018) which is an issue I have never had on any other mechanical keyboard I've used.

The next keyboard I get will definitely have analog switches - I just think that they are where mechanical keys are going in the future and they have obsoleted the traditional switch designs. Wooting don't make keyboards in a form factor I like yet, though.

I use a Keychron Q6, 's a very very nice board. The gaskets make for a very nice feel and sound, the software (or rather, lack thereof, everything is VIA) is great, compatibility is good, and as far as I can tell now (had it for a few months) it's very well-built.
The included caps are very nice too, they have an SA shape which I adore. In the future I'd like to get actual SA-profile keycaps (the Keychron ones are what they call OSA, SA shape but OEM profile).
Switches are the Kailh⨯NovelKeys Box Navy, a very stiff and ultra tactile clicky. Unlike the MX Blues that have given clickies a horrible rep, these are quite sophisticated, with a massive 45g tactile bump after a 90g activation force. They're the most tactile switch in production, actually. You can't get more tactile than them LOL, the sound is obviously very loud but very clear, not like the rattly pingy plasticky blues.

Before this board I had a Ducky One 3, but I had to stop using it after less than a year because the hotswap sockets are absolute garbage. The preinstalled shitty switches have rather thick pins, and the sockets simply don't return, making it chatter to hell and back as soon as you take out the switches once. Although I heard that others had issues without ever changing the switches, so ...
It's a shame, because the Ducky Shine 7 I had before was actually quite good. It seems Ducky fell off, with pandemic + chip shortage they simply couldn't make their good lines (Shine) anymore and their normal lines lost quality.
I do still use the One3 though, I put reds (Gateron G Pro Red, whatever that means. They came with the Q6) in it and tapemodded the thing, and it's got a job now as a secondary backup keyboard, both for when I'm elsewhere (like right now! I'm typing on it right now, actually), and for if I need to be a lot quieter. There's still a lot to like about Ducky, it's just that they've been far dethroned.

After much deliberation I finally got sick enough of the Dell OEM keyboard I was using and settled on what keyboard to get.

Ended up going with Keychron K8 Pro, their Cherry Profile Double - Shot PBT Full Set Keycaps - Dolch Pink keycaps and Gazzew Boba U4T 68g switches.

The board itself it TKL and even though I never imagined that it would get to this point for myself, after considering things and how I want to use this keyboard I decided that shaving that side of the keyboard off would actually make sense for me. I want to be able to comfortably use this board with my laptop and iPad as well and none of the fullsize keyboard I've had in the past actually fit properly in any bag I've had. I'm still reaching for the phantom numpad enter key that would be at the bottom right of the board but am met with nothing........ I'm sure that'll go away eventually.

The switches were a whole thing as well and I had a very tough time deciding on a set. Reviewers are absolutely useless because they tend to use "it's subjective !!!!" as an excuse to not provide any deeper statistics whatsoever. I mean I suppose it do be subjective but it's actually possible to make estimates if you have a point of comparison, measured decibels at a given distance etc would be nice but [/rant]. I knew I wanted tactile, I've had Cherry MX Blues in the past and whilst I did like their feel at the time the sound eventually gave me a headache and the gimmick of a loud keyboard in any sense wore off. A while after that when I was looking for another new keyboard I was told Cherry MX Browns basically had the same feel as Blues but without the loud. I'm not sure how to describe it but my hands just got tired of them after a while despite only being 55g and not having this issue with the 60g Blues so I'm not sure what was up with that. The ones I ended up settling on were the 68g variant of the Gazzew Boba U4T switches after watching a couple videos on tactile switches and their sound. There's also 62g and 65g variants but I decided to bet on heavier since I tend to Slam Down on the keys while typing normally. A commenter on YouTube described them as sounding Scrumptious and it do be a pretty good description in my imo.

For the keycaps I originally wanted to go more creative and try to do a mix with dark grey for regular key and mixing purple and green for the more specialised keys, but that would've probably required me to buy multiple keycap sets or put one together myself and things were already getting expensive enough, so I just went with Keychron's Dolche Pink set and I think they look nice. All there is to say about that.

omg this girl uses a keychron too, but it is the k10 pro. Using the Durock L7 linear 78G switches (i do be somewhat of a a linear lady if i do say so myself). Used to use cherry mx blacks and i wanted heavier but not annoying loud, otherwise i would go with the box navy same as osk.
For keycaps, i wanted a set that also had Japanese characters on them beacuse i want to learn to type Japanese in kana instead of entering romazi. Also they have the funny NGE theme.

Might do the kana keys at some point myself, perhaps when I finally figure out my custom put together set. Did hear that apparently romazi typing is the common way to type on computers in Japan but Source: Anglos on the Internet, given you've actually been there maybe you've Observed anything?

from what i could see at the town hall they did still use the kana input, as well as some places that use ipads use the full kana layout on the ipad. But i do think it is kinda outdated way of typing yeah and that most do type in romazi
