a friend showed me this charming little operetta he used to watch each christmas as a young boy the other day. i hadn't heard of it even in the slightest and i was quite pleased with the music and a more romantic-period voice casting despite it being written in 1951. it's a whimsical piece about a poor widow and her crippled son in a village of shepherds who are visited by the magi on their way to worship the christchild, and its short duration and fanciful flourishes makes it a wonderful first opera for a child to see, though its composition is reminiscent of the general operatic structure in such a way that it invites one to further appreciate more complex pieces in the future. i definitely think i'll be listening to it around christmastime in the future
