I agree with the need for reading VNs in bed, though that's at least the advantage of the nscripter games since they basically can run on anything (phone/tablet, handheld consoles, hell even the gameboy advance if you're brave enough)
Almost all Western fantasy novels fall into this category for me. What makes it difficult is that every fantasy novel feels exactly the same. It's all just generic European medieval setting + elves and orcs and trolls and bla bla. On the other hand you might get some kind of magic/witchcraft but these are just dudes running around in silly hats. Nothing feels unique it's just castles and windmills and elves and orcs. This also poisons JRPGs by proxy as the vast majority of them are an even more dumbed-down version of the generic fantasy setting, which has spun off into its own subgenre with slimes and healers and whatever else came out of Dragon Quest.
