reviewed some maps from the surrounding states and was pleased with my current location, the lake effect off superior brings the temperature up here to a comparable average to eau claire, which has some of the best farmland in the state. upper michigan has significant advantages especially in the center of the peninsula bordering superior, though i've heard they tend to get more snow there than here. a friend from church was originally from skanee near l'anse which is in that belt and he said that right next to the lake the snow tends to melt quicker because of the ambient temperature off it, and i've been there a few times running the paper and for livestock. really beautiful area, very remote and underpopulated. i would probably live there if it didn't make me a resident of michigan which i absolutely refuse on account of their government being a complete wreck
i considered for a time moving northwest along superior into minnesota if i was ever forced to move due to the market suddenly changing but it looks more bitter there than even north central wisconsin, so that wouldn't be ideal. it's also incredibly rocky there as i learned from running the paper from brainerd, though very beautiful. if that circumstance ever came to pass i'd probably suck it up and go to upper michigan as i've met some rather successful farmers all over the place there
milwaukee and chicago areas got bumped up a zone, i'll have to tell my cousin nico about that next time i see him. he's been trying to garden down there for years in the city and he hates that the most arable parts of the state have been concreted over probably even more than i do, since he lives that reality every single day
